Wilma Jean Leidig, 79, Chesapeake Beach, MD, died Thursday, October 26, 2023, after a long illness at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home..

A graveside funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 4, at the Washington City Cemetery in Washington, KS.  Pastor Ron Brown officiated.

Wilma was born in Nebraska, to Cecil and Dorothy (Finch) Leidig on December 27, 1943.  She enjoyed her childhood in Kansas, often sharing stories of a beautiful life on the farm, with siblings, chores, horses and plenty laughter.

She graduated from Washington High School and made her way to Maryland.  She worked for at NASA- Goddard Space Flight Center for 10 years.  Then joined the staff at Kiplinger Washington Editors from May 1973 to April 1985.  

In 1978, Wilma married her constant companion Maceo Leatherwood. Wilma worked side by side with Maceo, through Double L Graphics and managing his gallery, touring and art shows.  In 1989, Wilma became a realtor and year after year achieved top agent honors.

Wilma loved quilting, baking bread, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.   Maceo and Wilma enjoyed traveling with her sisters and their husbands across the country, especially the Southwest. Always together, the devoted couple enjoyed working and relaxing around their home and spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Linda Leidig, Celia Schmidt, Joyal Crain, Marvel Boston; brother, Lonnie Leidig; and brothers-in-law, Bill Shorman, Ernest Scheetz, Bob Boston and son Maceo Leatherwood Jr.

Survivors include her husband Maceo Leatherwood, Chesapeake Beach, MD; daughter Vanita Leatherwood and spouse Donna (DE), son Rodney Mullens and spouse Janice (MD), eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sisters Carol Shorman, Green (KS) Zetta Scheetz, Fairbury (NE), brother, Jerry (Sue) Leidig, Salina (KS), brother-in-law, Richard Schmidt, Western (NE); Peggy Leidig, Washington (KS); twenty-five nieces & nephews, many dear friends near and departed.

A memorial fund is established and will be designated later.  Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington, KS.
