He served in the US Army from 1951-53, stationed at Fort Smith AR, Fort Sill OK, and Fort Hood TX. He returned to Washington County and married Iola (Myers) on February 11, 1956, at the Catholic Cathedral in Lincoln, Nebraska. They moved to the family farm, where they resided together for 60 years, raising four children; Darrel, Larry, Deb and Bruce.

He was honored with the Kansas Bankers Award for Soil Conservation (1973), Veterans Honor Flight to Washington DC (2017), and Farm Bureau Century Farm Award (2025).
Louis will be fondly remembered for his resolute integrity, unwavering work ethic, keen sense of humor, storytelling prowess, knowledge of world news, and the uncanny ability to recall Birthdays for everyone in his sphere of life. He earned and proudly wore the nickname “Heavy Duty Louie” because of his commitment to engineering and building everything to endure the indelible test of time.
