Fern Lindsley, 97, Morrowville, died Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the Washington County Hospital, Washington. Visitation was from 11 until 8 p.m., Sunday, April 22, at Ward Funeral Home, Washington. The family received friends from 4 to 6 p.m. A funeral service was held 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 23, at the Morrowville Christian Church, Morrowville. Pastor Ron Brown officiated. Gina Miller was the organist and accompanied the congregation as they sang “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Pallbearers were Gary Smith, Dennis Smith, Bob Elliott, Leo Moore, Jim Burton, James Espinoza and Wendell Lindsley. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery, Washington. Fern was born on November 5, 1920 at rural Morrowville to Calvin and Louise (Boecker) Smith. She graduated from Morrowville High School in 1939 and went on to Kansas State and earned her teaching certificate. Fern taught country school at Triumph, Iowa Creek, McGregor, and Stevens Schools. On December 28, 1941, Fern married Kenneth Lindsley and they had two sons, Ronald and Larry. Kenneth died September 15, 1962. Fern enjoyed reading, yard work, gardening and bird watching. She was a good cook and her grandchildren thought she made the best pumpkin pie ever! Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Kenneth; four sisters and their spouses, Leota (Earl) Moore, Doris (Eldon) Taylor, Dorothy (Orville) Elliott, Betty (Mel) Holder; and two brothers, Wayne Smith, Dale (Janice) Smith. Survivors include her sons, Larry (Verda) Lindsley, Morrowville, Ronnie (Chrissy) Lindsley, Haddam; sister-in-law, Donis Corman, Clay Center; and five grandchildren and three step great grandchildren. A memorial fund is established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
