Donald L. Dodds

March 4, 1935 — July 21, 2025

Greene, NY

Donald Leroy Dodds, 90, passed away peacefully in the company of loved ones, on July 21, 2025, in Greene, New York. A devoted educator, veteran, and family man, Don lived a life marked by service, compassion and unwavering dedication to those around him.

Born on March 4, 1935 in Barnes, Kansas, Don’s early years laid the foundation for a life of learning and leadership. He pursued higher education with passion and purpose, earning an education degree and teaching certificate from Central Washington University. His commitment to academic excellence continued with two Masters degrees in education from Eastern Washington University – credentials that would support a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in the classroom.

Don proudly served his country during the Korean War. Though he was not deployed into direct combat, he worked closely with units supporting those on the front lines. Later, he contributed to the development of military technology that would go on to save countless lives. His service was a source of deep pride and honor throughout his life.

A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Don allowed his faith to guide his actions and relationships. His spiritual convictions were evident in the way he treated others – with kindness, humility, and respect.

Don’s impact as an educator extended far beyond textbooks and lesson plans. Beloved by students and colleagues alike, he brought a warmth and enthusiasm into every classroom he entered. His influence shaped generations of learners who remember him, not only for what he taught, but for how deeply he cared.

Outside of the classroom, Don dedicated himself to community service through his long-standing involvement with the Boy Scouts. As a Scout Master and Merit Badge counselor for decades, he mentored countless young people – instilling values of integrity, perseverance and civil responsibility.

In later years, Don turned his talents toward grant writing. With characteristic diligence and heart, he helped schools, municipalities, non-profits and first responders secure critical funding – ensuring they had the resources needed to serve their communities safely and effectively.

Don’s personality was magnetic – his smile infectious and his hugs legendary. He had an uncanny ability to sense when someone needed comfort or encouragement – and always delivered it with grace. He believed in respecting others deeply, learning constantly, laughing freely, crying openly when needed, loving without reservation – and treating everyone as if they were the most fascinating person in the room. And above all else; always had a great story ready to share.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Sandra, three brothers, and one sister.

He is survived by one sister, Norma (Ron) Doran. He is also survived by 4 children; Daniel (Sandra) Dodds, Stacey (Jeff) Mowatt, Stephanie Dodds, and Dale (Kirsten) Dodds; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., August 30, 2025 at the Washington City Cemetery.

Donald Leroy Dodds leaves behind a legacy defined not by accolades or titles, but by love freely give and lives profoundly touched. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him – and may we carry forward his examples of kindness, curiosity, laughter, faithfulness, and storytelling.
