Maynard R. Smith, 92, Washington, died Saturday, February 24, 2007 at the Clay County Medical Center, Clay Center. He was born in Haddam to Edd and Hazel (Cornwell) Smith on August 7, 1914. Maynard was united in marriage to Theresa Steier on December 27, 1951 at Belleville, KS. To this union three daughters were born. Maynard began farming at an early age and farmed for over 40 years. He worked at the ASCS office for 26 years as a Field Supervisor and was a seed salesman for 38 years. He greatly enjoyed his time working with the county farmers. Maynard left the farm after the death of his wife Theresa on September 8, 1969 and moved to Washington. He looked forward to his volunteer service at KSDS and the Friday card games at Friendly Corners. He assisted others by providing transportation and administrative support for disabled relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife Theresa; his brother, Thomas Smith; and a sister, Floriene Adams. Maynard is survived by daughters; Louella Kern and husband Bill, Washington, Dianne Smith, Columbus, OH, Carol Alexander and husband Dennis, Clifton; sister, Lorena Brunsilius, Denver, CO; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; and cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral service for Maynard will be held 10 am Wednesday, February 28 at the Ward Funeral Home, Washington. Dr. Rex Fuller will officiate. Interment will be in the Haddam City Cemetery. Casket bearers are Paul Keller, Ryan Kern, Adam Kern, Bryce Sillyman, Tyler Kern, and Emily Sillyman. Honorary bearers are Lonny Adams, Bob Kern and Guy Steier. Memorials have been established to KSDS, Friendly Corners, Vision of Grace Baptist Church or the Washington County Museum. Ward Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
