Lee Aaron Combow, 89, died peacefully at his home on Monday, October 11, 2010, in Apple Valley, CA. On a date to be determined, Lee's ashes will be buried at Maplewood Cemetery, in Washington County, Kansas. The memorial service and/or graveside service will be through Ward Funeral Home. A memorial service was held in Apple Valley, CA on Saturday, October 16, 2010. Lee was born on February 6, 1921 to Zena and Daniel Combow of Greenleaf, Kansas. Lee joined the U.S. Navy in October 1941. He served on a minesweeper in the Panama Canal area and on a battle ship in the Pacific. After WWII he married Virginia Rose Van Kirk of Barnes Kansas and they settled in Barstow, CA. After Lee had worked 20 years for Santa Fe Railroad in Barstow, he attended college and began a new career as a high school teacher in Imperial, CA. During his life he was an active union member, both at Santa Fe and the school where he taught, holding office in the former. He enjoyed road trips and loved camping and fishing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Lee most currently attended the Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church in Barstow. Survivors include: his wife Hilda Jean; two daughters: Charlene Ann Ledbetter of Fresno, CA and Lauretta Sue Rion and her husband Matthew of Atkins, IA; one granddaughter: Stefani Jane Dauderman and her husband Craig of Clovis, CA; two great granddaughters: Shauna Marie Dauderman, and Kailey Nicole Dauderman, of Clovis, CA.
