James "J.V." Cole

James "J.V." Cole, 81, died Thursday, September 9, 2010 at the Hanover Hospital, Hanover, Kansas. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 13 at the United Methodist Church, Washington. Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock and Rev. Wendell Sack officiated. Sheila Ouellette was the organist. Sandie Hood sang "How Great Thou Art" and Matt Glatter sang "Peace in the Valley". Sandie, Matt and Crystal Glatter sang "Amazing Grace". The pallbearers were Ed Wright, Ted Bruna, Tom Russell, Gary Padgett, Norman Stewart and Jim Breeding. The honorary pallbearers were Lee Gauby, Arlan Campbell, Ray Callaway, Bob Largent, Darrel Nelson, Dr. Roger Warren and Dr. Clyde Jones. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. J.V. was born January 15, 1929 at Greenleaf, KS, son of Ralph B. and Dolly Mae (Cramer). He graduated from Washington High School in 1946. He enjoyed taking care of the land and was a lifelong farmer. J.V. farmed over fifty years east of Washington where he raised crops and livestock. He was twice awarded the Grassland Award. J.V. was a past president for the Lions Club and enjoyed following and watching his children's sporting events. His parents and wife, Billie M. Cole on July 12, 1976, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Doris; sons, James K. Cole (Trudy) of Washington, Jon Cole (Heaven) of Saudi Arabia, Jerre Cole (Kim) Highland, KS, Jeff Cole (Cammie) of Minden, NE, Bryan Collins (Karen) of Seattle, WA; daughter, Sandie Hood (Mike) of Washington; sister, Otie Erickson of Courtland, KS; eighteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in his name and will be designated by the family. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
