Everett Dean Cushing, 86, died July 11, 2010 at the Community Memorial Healthcare, Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, at the Washington Christian Church. Burial was in the Greenleaf City Cemetery. Everett Dean was born east of Kimeo in Washington County Kansas on August 3, 1923, the son of James Jr. and Carrie Ethel (Unfred) Cushing. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, having served aboard the Heavy Cruiser, U.S.S. Chicago and in the Naval Air Force. Later, he worked as a barber and for an oil field producing company in Great Bend, Kansas. Dean also worked in construction and was a maintenance man for the Greenleaf Housing Authority for 12 years. On March 26, 1976 he married Jean (Osbourn) Wiechman at Topeka, Kansas. Dean was a member of the Washington Christian Chuirch and a member of the American Legion for 62 years. He enjoyed watching “The Price is Right” and “Wheel of Fortune”, reading, dancing, roller and ice skating and traveling and performing with a skating group. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Wayne, Donald, Roy, Kenneth and Robert; and three sisters, Beulah Cushing, Eula Headrick and Elma Cairns. Survivors include his wife, Jean, Greenleaf; stepchildren, Kollette Hiesterman (Dee), Vickie Hiesterman (Phil) and Joseph Wiechman; three sisters, Doris Zemlicka, Wichita, Norma Jackson (Warren), San Antonio, TX, Maxine Harris (Bruce), Sebring, Florida; brother, Ivan Cushing, Greenleaf; four step-grandchildren, Lisa Reynolds (Shawn), Jordan Hiesterman (Cammi), Luke Hiesterman and Heather Hiesterman. A memorial fund has been established to the Washington Christian Church or the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
