Katheryn Mae Howland, 87, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the Washington County Hospital. A funeral service was held 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 26 at the Washington Christian Church, Washington. Pastor John Frey officiated. Sheila Ouellette played the organ while Dr. Jim Smart sang “Old Rugged Cross” and “Rock of Ages.” Burial was in the Fairbury City Cemetery, Fairbury, Nebraska. Mae was born on May 1, 1922 to William and Katheryn (Gundelfinger) Seitz at rural Hollenberg. She attended school and graduated from Hollenberg High School. On April 9, 1944, Mae was united in marriage to Melvin L. Howland on the farm at Hollenberg. She helped her husband farm and worked as a nurse’s aid at the Washington County Hospital for 25 years. She belonged to an Extension Club and loved working at Hearts and Things. Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin on Januaary 7, 2005; two brothers, Charles and Martin; and two sisters, Betty Jean and Marie Arlene. She is survived by sons, Glen Howland (Shirrolyn) of Washington, Ronald Howland (Marilyn) of Lake George, CO; a brother, Harold Seitz (Lois) of Wichita; a sister, June Wineinger (Carl) of Hollenberg; and 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in her name and will be designated by the family at a later time. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
