Carla J. Svanda, 71, of Washington, KS, died January 13, 2017, at Lincoln, NE. Visitation was Friday, January 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. Pastor Judy Hill officiated. Music played was “Amazing Grace,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” Honorary pallbearers were Trey Thorn, Justin Svanda, Stacy Svanda Paige Svanda, William Svanda and Owen Svanda. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Carla was born June 30, 1945, at Marysville, KS, daughter of Carl and Gertrude (Smith) Binggeli. In 1963, she graduated from Marysville High School. On June 9, 1963, she married James Svanda at Frieden’s Lutheran Church in Home, KS. They moved to Washington. She worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Washington County Hospital for 40 years before retiring. Carla also enjoyed volunteering at the Washington County Museum, making items for Hearts & Things, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Svanda on November 28, 2013; and a brother, Doyle Binggeli. Survivors include her sons, Rick (Diana) Svanda, Jerry (Kelly) Svanda, both of Washington, and Jeff Svanda, Haddam; siblings, Ed (Selena) Hawkins, Home, KS, Mary Rueger, Lincoln, NE, Charles (Sherrie) Binggeli, Lawrence, KS, and Pete (Bonnie) Binggeli, Midland, TX; 4 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family later. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
