Dorothy E. Sawin, 88, of Washington, KS, died January 11, 2017, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Washington. Visitation was Wednesday, January 18, from Noon to 8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Celebration of Life was held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 19, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Washington. Father David Metz officiated. Gina Miller was organist the the congregation sang “Here I Am Lord,” “Prayer of St. Francis,” “On Eagles Wings,” “You are Mine” and “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.” The pallbearers were Brice Sawin, Joss Sawin, Courtney Sawin, Terry Fencil, Tony Fencil, and Mike Fencil. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Dorothy was born October 19, 1928, at a farmhouse northwest of Morrowville, KS, daughter of James and Mary (Mathy) Fencil. She attended grade school at Pursely Rural School northwest of Morrowville and graduated from Morrowville Rural High School in 1946. Her senior year she took a teaching course and taught for two years. On July 27, 1948, she married Duaine Sawin at Clyde, KS. They resided in rural Washington. To this union were born six children, Larry, Lonnie, Gayle, Glenda, Scott, and Steven. Dorothy enjoyed raising her family on the family farm. In later years, she worked for various businesses in Washington and volunteered with many organizations in the area. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duaine; brothers, Gerald, Lawrence, and Bill Fencil; and a sister, Phyllis Hyland. Survivors include her children, Larry (Cindy) Sawin, Lonnie (Mary) Sawin, Gayle (Paul) Monty, Scott (Robin) Sawin, all of Washington, Glenda (Lyle) Stohs, Marysville, and Steven (Sally) Sawin, Dallas, TX; brother, Don Fencil, Greenleaf; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
