John "Jack" Barley

John “Jack” Richard Barley, 86, Washington, died on November 25, 2016 at the Washington County Hospital. Visitation was on Tuesday, November 29, 2016, from noon until 8 p.m. at the Ward Funeral Home, Washington. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service was at 1 p.m., Wednesday, November 30, at the Ward Funeral Home, Washington with Pastor Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Pallbearers were Jeff Barley, J.P. Barley, Preston Barley, L.J. Barley, Jay Kolterman and Greg Kolterman. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Jack was born at St. Joseph, MO on November 10, 1930 to John J. and Dorothy (Barth) Barley. He graduated from Washington High School (1949) and earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas (1954). On June 6, 1954, he was united in marriage to Jenne’ Walker at the Dan Forth Chapel in Lawrence, KS. After the wedding Jack and Jenne’ moved to Connecticut where Jack worked for International Silver as a silversmith. Jack then spent seven years in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed across the United States with the last three years spent in Japan. After his military service, as a 1st Lieutenant, they moved to Washington in 1963. Jack worked for the State of Kansas as a social worker and retired in 1993. Jack always enjoyed working for the community and surrounding areas. For over fifty years he was very active in the Lions Club and served as a District Governor in 1973. He was also a member of the Washington County Historical Society serving as President for over 20 years, the Oregon-California Trail Association, Friends of the Hollenberg Station, and the Linn American Legion. He was very involved with the Boy Scout Troop #86. Jack was a lifetime member of the University of Kansas Alumni Association and The Delta Chi Fraternity. Rock Chalk Jayhawk! Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant brother; daughter-in-law, Nancy Sue Barley; and grandson, Brady Preston Barley. Survivors include his wife, Jenne’; sons, John (J.P.) Barley, Dorchester, NE, Jeff (Rhonda) Barley, Wichita; sister, Marilynn Barley, Washington; two grandsons, John Lester (LJ) (Samantha) Barley, Preston Cash Barley; one great granddaughter Kyra Ann Barley and one niece Robin Jumps, Lincoln NE. A memorial fund has been established to the Washington County Historical Society or the Washington Lions Club. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
