Donald L. Fencl, 67, of Washington, KS, died June 17, 2009 at his home. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 23 at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. Pastor John Frey officiated. Burial was in the Haddam City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mitch Fencl, Bobby Svanda, Randy Griffin, Rodney Griffin, Brian Fencl and Larry Stockebrand. Military honors were provided by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Don was born August 15, 1941, at Haddam, KS, the son of Henry and Agnes (Neidar) Fencl. He attended Morrowville High School. He served in the U.S. Army and a 13 month tour in Korea. Don worked 3 years on the pipeline with his brothers, Gary and Joe, worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, and worked track maintenance for the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired from the railroad in 2003. Don enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed getting up early in the mornings to drive around and watch the sun rise. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Gary and Henry Fencl, Jr. Survivors include five sisters, Lora Mae Simmons of Newton, KS, Peggy Svanda and Toby Anderson of Washington, Carol Small and husband A.O. of Washington, Mary Ann Griffin of Fairbury, NE, and Sharon K. Fencl of Clay Center, KS; brothers, Jim Fencl of Beatrice, NE, Wayne Fencl of Lancaster, CA, Joseph J. Fencl of Washington, Roy Fencl of Bakersfield, CA, and Roger Fencl of Sand Springs, OK; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial fund has been established to KSDS or Children’s Cancer Research.
