Jerry Pierce, 68, Washington, died Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at the Washington County Hospital. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m., on October 23, at the Ward Funeral Home in Washington. Funeral service was 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the United Methodist Church, Washington. Bill Bryant officiated. Gay Lynn Manning was organist and the congregation sang “Amazing Grace.” The “Andy Griffith Theme” and “Unchained Melody” were played. Honorary Pallbearers were Jacob Winger, Nicholas Winger, Joshua Hattan, Mason Hattan, Benjamin Ohmes, Owen Ohmes, Maxwell Ohmes, Carter Ohmes, Andy Ohmes, Chris Hattan, Ted Bruna, Gary Edgar and Dick Powell. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Jerry was born to Edward and Frances (Johnson) Pierce at the family home in Union City, TN on January, 26, 1947. He graduated high school and joined the U.S. Army in December of 1965. Jerry served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in 1971. He was united in marriage to Sharon Tegethoff on April 8, 1967 at the United Methodist Church in Washington. They lived in Manhattan after his return from service where he worked at a hardware store and trailer manufacturer before going to Ft. Riley where he learned to be an electrical lineman. They moved to South Fulton, TN, where Jerry worked for Fulton Electric System, a part of the Tennessee Valley Authority. In the spring of 1979, they moved back to Washington where Jerry went to work for the city of Washington. He worked for Endicott Clay Products before going on his own doing electrical work and tree trimming. Jerry returned to work for the city as Electric Line Superintendent. Jerry enjoyed drag racing and loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed watching The Andy Griffith Show, Sanford and Sons, westerns, and hunting and fishing shows on television. Jerry didn’t know a stranger and was always willing to help anyone. He loved meeting new people and visiting with his friends. He served as a School Board Member for USD 222, board of trustees for Methodist Church and was a member of the Scottish Rite and Isis Shrine. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Mickey and Richard; and sister, Doris. Survivors include his wife Sharon; daughters, Lisa (Christopher) Winger-Hatten, Pleasant Hill, MO. Amanda (Andrew) Ohmes, Jordan, MN; sister-in-law, Martha (Tom) Tice, Centreville, VA; brothers, James, Terry, Joe; sisters, Sandra, Mildred, Melissa, Linda, Darlene; and eight grandsons; Jacob, Nicholas, Joshua, Mason, Benjamin, Owen, Maxwell and Carter. A memorial fund is established to the Shriner’s Hospital or the United Methodist Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
