Florence Marie Alwin, 91, Washington, died Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Leonardville Nursing Home, Leonardville, KS. Visitation was from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., Sunday, September 27 at the Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service was 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 28, at the United Methodist Church, Washington with Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Sheila Ouellette was the organist and the congregation sang "Sweet Hour of Prayer," "In the Garden," and "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were Scott Alwin, Brandon Alwin, Clay Alwin, Brandon Alwin, David Alwin, Daniel Tillet, Michael Gary and Troy Miller. Honorary Pallbearers were Andrea Aggert, Amber Paynter, Alicia Evans, Erin Graves, Samantha Yensco, Kathy Hynek, Melony Jueneman, Christie Brungardt, Amy Koehn and Jennifer Hill. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. Florence was born April 21, 1924, on the family farm in Peachgrove Township, Riley County, KS. to Edward Henry and Florence Marie (Eversmeyer) Specht. She attended school and graduated from Barnes High School. On May 5, 1946, she married Vaughn E. Alwin at Fancy Creek Methodist Church, rural Randolph. They had six children, Darold, Gary, Steve, Bruce, Janet and Donna. Florence was a homemaker until her children were raised and then went to work as a Med Aide at the Homestead Nursing Home. She enjoyed her family and grandchildren and attending ballgames. Florence did quilting, cross stitching and gardening. She also enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Vaughn; nine siblings, Ruth, Daniel, Rudolph, Esther, Glenn, Gene, Lowell, David, Clem; one grandson and two great granddaughters. Survivors include her children, Darold (Cindy) Alwin, LaJunta, CO, Gary Alwin, Washington, Steve (Barb) Alwin, Colby, Bruce (Bobbi) Alwin, Sugar City, CO, Janet (Larry) Tillett, Clay Center, Donna Alwin, Marysville; sister-in-law, Alyce Jean Specht, Randolph; eighteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial fund is established to Meadowlark Hospice or the Leonardville Nursing Home. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
