John Henry Depew, 86, died Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the Washington County Hospital. A funeral service was 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 25 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Greenleaf, KS with Fr. David Metz officiating. Sheila Ouellette was organist and the choir sang “Be Not Afraid”, “On Eagles Wings” and “You Are Mine.” Pallbearers were Rob Long, Jim Long, David Long, John Long, John McGrath and Doug Crandall. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. John was born in Washington County, Kansas on April 21, 1928, to Orville and Florence (Crimmins) Depew. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged on November 21, 1947. John worked construction along with his brothers, laying pipe for the pipeline. He traveled all over the country doing this for several years, then returned to Greenleaf. At Greenleaf, John worked for the Farmers Coop until his retirement. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Greenleaf American Legion. John had a great sense of humor and liked everyone he met. He was devoted to his family and looked out for his sisters, always making sure they were okay and had what they needed. Survivors include thirteen nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill Depew, Neil Depew, Dan Depew; and sisters, Doris Depew, Jeanne Depew, Shirley Foster and Mary Ann Long. A memorial fund is established to American Cancer Society or Greenleaf American Legion. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
