Sylvia Mai, 77, of Linn, Kan., entered rest Monday, March 24, 2014 at Linn, Kan.The funeral service was 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 28 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linn. Pastor Tom Sahl officiated. Anita Singular was organist and played "Beautiful Savior" and "Onward Christian Soldiers", while the congregation sang.  Special recorded music was played, "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "Abide With Me." Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Linn. Pallbearers were Justin Ohlde, Kyler Ohlde, Levi Ohlde, Weston Ohlde, Carson Mai and Marley Mai. Sylvia was born to Arne and Elvie (Carlson) Johnson on April 20, 1936 at Concordia, KS.   She graduated from Courtland High School in 1953 and went on to Bethany College, receiving her Bachelor Degree in 1957. She earned her Masters Degree from Kansas State University. On June 23, 1957, Sylvia was united in marriage to Vernon at Ada Lutheran Church in Kackley, KS.   Prior to 1971, Sylvia was a homemaker and stay at home mom to her two children, Cynthia and Evan. She also taught piano lessons. In 1971, she worked as a Chapter 1 Remedial Teacher, for Linn Public Grade School, Palmer Grade School, Zion Lutheran School and St. John Lutheran School, retiring in 1997. Sylvia was a member of St. Paul; Lutheran Church, WOW (Women of the Word), and Beaver Homemakers in Republic County. She served as a church organist and sang in the Messiah Chorus at Bethany and then with the Linn Community Messiah. Preceding her in death were her parents; and sisters-in law, Eunice Mai and Ruth Mai. Survivors include her husband, Vernon; son, Evan Mai, Laguna Hills, CA; daughter, Cynthia (Steve) Ohlde, Linn; brothers-in-law, Arthur Mai, Sharon Springs, Raymond (Ardyce) Mai, Lindsborg, William (Wilma) Mai, Sharon Springs, David (Linda) Mai, Sharon Springs; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Pat) Pickett, Slater, IA; and six grandchildren. A memorial fund is established to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linn, or Meadowlark Hospice.
