Lavern G. Long, 91, of Linn, KS, died December 4, 2013 at the Linn Community Nursing Home. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday. December 7, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Linn. Pastor Tom Sahl officiated. Anita Singular played the organ while the congregation sang "How Great Thou Art" and "O God Our Help Ages Past". The pallbearers were Matt Long, Jeff, Long, David Long, David lehman, Donald Lehman and Jim Long. The honorary pallbearers were Jeremy Hinkle, Kevin Weiche, Brent Lehman, Scott Becker and Jeff McPherson. Burial was in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery. Lavern was born January 4, 1922 near Morrowville, KS, to Robert B. and Amelia (Stettnisch) Long. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Linn. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1947 and another nine years in the reserves. Lavern received a Purple Heart. Lavern was very active in the Linn Community. He was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Linn American Legion. He was a rural mail carrier from 1962 until 1994 and was the owner of Long’s Construction, from 1963 to 2010. Lavern liked to bowl, and pitch horseshoes, when he wasn’t working. On December 3, 1947, he married Dorothy Lehman at Belleville, KS. She preceded him in death on April 4, 1997. He was also preceded by his parents; four sisters, Valeria Schwerdtfeger, Dorothy Weatherly, Loretta Kovich, Lorna Bugliarello; and two brothers, Ivan Long and Melvin Long. Survivors include daughters, Anita (Richard) Weiche, Hanover, LaVerna (Roger) Hinkle, Manhattan; sons, Larry Lehman, Topeka, Ron (Reyne) Lehman, Manhattan; brother, Robert (Marilyn) Long, Salina; sisters, Vida Anderson, Salina, Delphia Simmons, Portland, OR; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established in his name and will be designated by the family later. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
