Verlin Herrs

Verlin R. Herrs, 83, of Linn, KS, died Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 19, at Zion Lutheran Church, Linn. Pastor David Gruoner officiated. Eunice Beier was the organist and played congregational hymns "Be Still My Soul", "How Great Thou Art" and "Rock of Ages." Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Linn. Pallbearers were Greg Herrs, Michael Herrs, Brent Bokelman, Larry Scheele, Kent Scheele and Marvin Moormann, Jr. Verlin was born July 20, 1930 near Linn, KS, on the family farm to Theodore and Laura (Meyer) Herrs. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School west of Linn. After school he helped farm until entering the U.S. Navy. On September 30, 1956, he married Lola Scheele at Zion Lutheran Church in Linn. They lived south of Linn until moving near Washington. Verlin farmed until retiring in 1979 and moved to Linn. Verlin also worked as a carpenter, at the Palmer Lumber Yard, and was a NC+ Seed dealer for over 20 years. He enjoyed woodworking, making wood carvings and crafts, riding and training horses. Verlin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Zion Lutheran Church, and served as Fire Chief for the Morrowville Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Lola; four sons, Neil Herrs, Washington, Bruce (Dianne) Herrs, Hanover, Gene (Sandy) Herrs, Washington, and Mark Herrs, Oshkosh, WI; two brothers, LaVern (Doris) Herrs and Lowell (Linda) Herrs, Linn; sister, Marcelene (Dennis) Bokelman, Linn; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established to the Linn American Legion. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
