Rev. Erwin Meyer

Rev. Erwin Martin Meyer, 87, died March 1, 2008 at the Clay County Medical Center. Erwin the first child of Martin and Elise (Klipp) Meyer was born in Winfield, KS on May 28, 1920. He was baptized on June 6, 1920 and confirmed on May 20, 1934. Elementary education was from his father, secondary at Concordia College, Seward, NE, graduating in 1941. Mr. Meyer earned a Masters Degree in 1952. Twenty years were spent as a teacher in San Antonio, St. Louis, and Saginaw, MI. In 1962 he became a pastor by colloquy and served congregations at Cedar Falls, IA, St. Joseph, MI, Fairbank, IA and Oskaloosa, IA. Failing health forced early retirement in 1980. Regaining health, he served as interim pastor at Bremen, Elkhart, Garden City and Linn. On June 14, 1942 he was united in marriage to Doris Pierce at Venus, NE. This union was blessed with two children, Marcia Ann Winstel and John David Meyer. Erwin loved music, directing choirs, composing songs and playing various instruments. He also enjoyed poetry, especially writing many sonnets. Erwin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris, Clay Center; son John David, Waterloo, IA; daughter, Marcia Ann Winstel, Sumner, IA;sisters, Luella Kovac, Seward, NE, dorian Bisping and husband Don, Linn; and brothers, Gary Meyer and wife Loma, St. Paul, MN, and Del Meyer and wife Ann, York, NE. A funeral service was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Linn, on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Paul Tessaro officiated. Barbara Ruhnke played the organ while the congregation sang “My Faith Looks Up To Thee”, “Take My Life and Let It Be”, “Victory Over Death” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Firman Brandt, Donald Bisping Jr., Reynold Schaaf, Larry Reith, Phil Olson, and Doug Beikman.
