Phyllis M. Schuette, 85, died Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Homestead Nursing Home, Washington. A funeral service was held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 9 at the United Methodist Church, Washington. Pastor Randy Jellison-Knock officiated. Gina Miller played the organ while Ed Durst sang “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” The congregation sang “He Lives!” and “Hymn of Promise.” The pallbearers were her grandchildren, Neil Bekemeyer, Eric Bekemeyer, Ethan Schuette, Krystal Schuette and Brittany Schuette. The honorary pallbearers were John Lignitz, Robert Lignitz, Frank Lignitz, Doug Watson, Darrel Watson, Wesley Watson and Larry Lignitz. Burial was in the Washington City Cemetery. On January 25, 1926, Phyllis was born at Haddam to Ernest and Laura (Schultess) Lignitz. She attended school at Haddam and graduated from the Haddam High School. On December 5, 1953 she was united in marriage to Edwin Schuette. Phyllis was a homemaker. She enjoyed doing embroidery and crocheting, dancing, playing canasta, playing bingo and singing. She could also play piano by ear. Phyllis was a member of the United Methodist Church. Survivors are a daughter, Patricia (Glenn) Bekemeyer, Washington; two daughters-in-law, Carol Hergott, Washington, Barbara Schuette, Colby; a sister, Nina (Larry) Watson, Ceresco, NE.; sisters-in-law, Ruth Lignitz, Manhattan, Marian Lignitz, Marysville; and five grandchildren, Neil Bekemeyer, Eric Bekemeyer, Ethan Schuette, Krystal Schuette and Brittany Schuette. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Edwin; two sons, Lyle Schuette, Mark Schuette; and two brothers, Glen Lignitz and Arlo Lignitz. A memorial fund has been established to Meadowlark Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
